Chaos on Deponia: Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder 4.7beta1
HIGHLIGHTS:
The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder is the most comprehensive fan patch tool I ever wrote. For the first Deponia game alone, it can be used on 18 different versions. And now, it can also be used for 12 different versions of Chaos on Deponia.
Play Chaos on Deponia in its original quality without relying on problematic old engine versions. The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition makes it possible.
Many script bugs are fixed, resulting in a more stable game. Most importantly: No more game-breaking bugs with the meerkat.
No more chopped of syllables at the beginning of sentences. This is an issue with every current version of the game.
Credits in videos are again localized in all 4 dubbed audio languages, listing the actual voice actors of the version currently played.
Spanish and Italian voice acting has the platypus bataka commentator restored.
All 9 official subtitle languages are supported.
Additionally, the Czech fan translation by ADV Dream is included with kind permission.
Also the Brazilian Portuguese fan translation by scummbr.org | @scummbr is included with kind permission.
No more missing or wrong music at the showdown.
WHAT THIS IS NOT:
It does not add controller or touch support. There are currently no plans to add this, either.
The patch was not made with cloud saves in mind. It may or may not work. This is completely untested. Please use local saves.
It is not meant or testet on console versions of the game.
⚠ ATTENTION: LIMITATIONS IN THIS BETA:
Savegames most likely won't be compatible with the final build. They are only reliably when made with the same version.
German and English are play tested. Other languages may still contain errors or have missing lines.
This beta version is about the enhanced game experience as well as the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder itself, which is supposed to work on all 12 known versions, including the German demo version. Bug reports are very welcome.
Also whether the new Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder for MacOS works as intended has to be tested.
DISCLAIMER
Legal notice:
The original game is subject to copyright by Daedalic Entertainment GmbH.
This unofficial fan patch can and may only be used on legally purchased versions of the game. It is in no way intended for playing and/or distributing illegal copies of the game. Use is at your own risk. I accept no liability.
Out of respect, I did not include my own links in the game. There is only a mentioning to the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder when you hover over the "Credits" button. The credits roll was not altered, with the exception of an error correction in the German version.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you want a printout, expand the sections you need first.
What improvements will I get with the Ultimate-Fan-Patch-Edition?
Short answer: Many!
Unfortunately, Daedalic made quite some bad choices when updating their games over time. While they did fix some bugs, they introduced others at the same time, removed features, and reduced the quality quite a bit. Also the combination of Visionaire 4.2.5 and Opus audio has an engine bug, resulting in those annoying chopped of syllables at the beginning of sentences.
The intention of the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder is to restore the quality the game once had while also fixing bugs of the initial release and bug in recent versions.
Although, it is also possible to use it on a recent version of the game in order to fix the bugs including the Opus one, but the quality won't be restored in that case.
List of general improvements
Optimized language selection. It is far more responsive now, does not suffer from hang ups and it detects the audio languages actually installed, thus offering only those. It also starts automatically, if your selected audio language was removed.
There are some sanity checks now to inform the user if there are no videos or no audio languages installed.
When starting a new game, you are no longer asked wether you really want to while there currently is no game in progress.
Credits in videos are restored in all 4 dubbed languages.
Savegames made in the demo version can be continued in the full version. The other way around is possible up to the point where the demo would end, given that no screen has been visited which is not available in the demo.
Typos in the developer's commentary subtitles corrected.
The German and English developer's commentary will be remastered to get rid of those extreme variations in volume.
The songs in the developer's commentary will play in stereo now.
The developer's commentary refers at sources outside the game, which unfortunately are wrong. There are now additional notices with the actual sources.
Hints in the savegame menu are now displayed permanently instead of merely quickly when loading a savegame. Also the "next hint" button was moved to the savegame menu, completely replacing the former hints tab in the extras menu.
Walking sounds got a complete overhaul. They are now synchronous to the animations and the moderate panning is back too.
The puzzle pieces in the trawler and in the gadget shop are still collectible in chapter VI now.
It is now possible to skip the current chapter from the main menu, which has to be confirmed by the user.
The model map from the Complete Journey menu now serves as the chapter selection screen in the questlog, replacing the simple sheet of paper and thus preserving that nice artwork.
List of quality improvements
In addition to the bug fixes, you'll get these improvements when using the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder on an old version before 3.x:
All graphics in lossless quality.
All audio in high quality due to generous bit rates.
New options
Developer's Commentary:
The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition remasters the developer's commentary to get rid of those extreme variations in volume. It can only be activated, if it is installed from the Complete Journey Edition. If the selected audio or subtitle tracks are not German or Italian, English is used instead. Thus, the English commentaries have to be installed if played with Spanish dubbing.
Animated weather effects: The passing clouds can be turned on and off as in the 3rd game.
Achievements: Can be viewed offline in the bonus menu, like in Deponia 4. Given achievements will be synchronized online when playing in Steam or Galaxy.
Complete Journey Edition Bonus: Questlog and minigame help can be turned on and off when installed. The questlog keeps track of your progress, even when disabled and later turned on.
Bug fixes (no spoilers)
Some dialog options showing only a bunch of question marks in Russian is now fixed.
Plenty of grammar fixes in English.
The config.ini will be written and read from reliably under Linux.
The right menu door had a 1 pixel gap at the bottom, which is now fixed.
After the video "The Story so far", the game no longer pauses for several seconds.
The questlog was newly scripted to actually work properly.
The questlog's captions work reliably and consistent, instead of randomly big, small or no font at all.
When opening hints in the questlog, the scribbling sound is now played consistently.
When leaving the questlog button in the main menu, there no longer appears a misplaced "Continua" in the upper left corner when playing in Italian.
In the German settings menu, the subtitles button now reads "Untertitel" instead of the misleading "Bildschirmtext". It is only there to turn subtitles on and off after all.
The menu doors in the Daedalic logo video now match the colors of the main menu doors, thus transition seamlessly.
Developer's commentaries you're listened to are now remembered in the profile.
Junk parts are now falling down when opening the inventory, like in the 3rd game.
Rufus play every 4th air guitar with sound, like in the 3rd game.
The background fade while the inventory is open was fixed. Previously, this effect only worked in early versions of the first game.
The button for the questlog in the main menu is now absent like every other button when a question is asked to the user.
Achievements are correctly saved in the profile and work properly even when offline.
The audio panning for voice acting was fixed.
The developer's commentary has no useless text backdrop when subtitles are disabled.
The Italian developer's commentary now uses the existing lip sync data. There is no such thing for German or English commentaries, though.
Bug fixes (may contain spoilers)
In this sections, story elements will be mentioned, but described as vaguely as possible. Nevertheless, this area is marked spoiler alert.
The Goal puzzle will now reset correctly when starting a new game. It is no longer necessary to delete the profile in order to get both related Achievements. In case of a loaded savegame which has more pieces collected than in the profile, the number will be corrected automatically when collecting the next piece. No corrections take place in the other direction, though, which is the entire point of a cheated savestate. Hence, in case you collected a piece twice by accident, just start a new game and then continue from a savegame in which at least one piece is left uncollected.
The fisherman, Garlef and Cletus no longer speak in the background while playing the developer's commentary.
The lifeboat cutscenes has now working scripts in all audio languages restored. Basically, those scripts were in the game all the time, but unused. They now replace the subpar mixed and partially asynchronous video versions of the same scenes.
Grandma Utz' window at the toilet tank is now correctly placed between the pipe and the water and also no longer vanishes while there is water in the tank.
There is no awkward pause when Rufus activates the bellows for the first time.
The Bunsen burner, the fuse, the burning target, and the boiling water are no longer audible in the menu, but they do now play reliably when returning to the game.
The knife and the black powder don't jump up anymore before the use animation has started.
There is no gap anymore under the lantern at the blast tower establishing shot.
In the blast tower, the lifeboat is now properly aligned to the window's border and no longer clipping into it.
In English, the trawler now has its hotspots named "trawler" throughout the game, which is consistent with the dialogues.
In the closeup inside the trawler, its machine noise can now be heard in the background.
Dialog options at the gondolier are now aligned correctly.
The door to the trawler now has a consistent sound instead of 3 different ones throughout the game.
At the dock in chapter V, the trawler's door had no masking.
When clicking the back button on the map before visiting Doc, the misplaced help button does not appear there anymore.
At Wing's and Nod's ambush, the animation no longer jumps.
The Lott-O-Mat is now properly sitting on the table in chapter V.
The Lott-O-Mat is now properly animated, has sound, and draws a blank in chapter V.
When leaving the gadget shop, the door has now sound, even when you weren't invisible.
Taking off the Golden Dragon of Invisibility will play its sound effect now.
In one script "I'm ready whenever you are." had no audio in any language.
Liebold now has the same subtitle color throughout the game.
Gulliver's Gully does not play music when there is no sheet music or when it is dark. This was a bug since version 3.x.
Rufus can ask for another song only, if the jukebox is actually playing a song now.
The question to the Gulliver about the Unorganized Crime now correctly appears when asked for the Organon instead of the kind of people, which had no related hint.
The jukebox and the gondolier now respect the audio language reliably.
The jukebox no longer cross fades the song, but starts and stops exactly when the jukebox dwarf starts and stops playing, which includes conversations with Rufus.
Garlef can also be asked about Rock-Paper-Scissors when you already used the tournament fingers on him, instead of only when Gulliver mentioned that game.
Wenn Baby Goal talks to Gulliver, there is no longer a red cross visible under her.
The hatch to the Unorganized Crime does no longer jump when Wink shows up.
At the Unorganized Crime, Donna no longer jumps to the side by 1 pixel while talking.
Now, Donna is fully localized and subtitled during the application.
The pipe diverter now switches synchronous to the sound effect and no longer after the animation has finished.
The Easter egg with the voice volume also works when talking to the pharmacist directly now, and not only when trying to give him something. Also some related translations are fixed now.
At the marketplace with weather effects on, the jolly roger, the shadow to Doc's workshop and the arch to the dark alley are no longer missing from the scene.
Also at the harbor, some elements are restored when weather effects are on.
Several objects were slightly realigned at the market place to avoid that ugly 3 pixel gap at the right edge.
The Terminator Easter egg now has its English subtitles fixed to what is actually says.
The dialog in the alley between Liebold and Garlef about the new recruit now takes place reliably when visiting it the next time after Goal went there, no matter if the music is turned on.
The wrong knock is no longer almost identical to the old knock. This was especially irritating when turning on the music again after Rufus first knocked.
Janosch no longer says "Our troopsh need to shtrike firsht!" twice at the summery.
The platypus bataka commentator has its Spanish and Italian voice acting fully restored. (There never was a German one, though.)
The hotspots at the platypus bataka better match the on-screen marks now.
Rage-mode now counts correct and fair: When entering rage-mode, you have to block 5 attacks now to win. Due to a scripting error, winning was not possible if you missed the 5th attack and the game went on indefinitely until you ran out of health points.
Multilingual bonus: In the Italian or Spanish dubbing, the gondolier has its own verse before given a sheet of music yet. That verse is now subtitled in German, English and Czech as well. Despite combining Spanish and Italian with other subtitle languages is not recommended due to the incompatible editing, you may make an exception here and do it this one time anyway.
The background music no longer crossfades into the gondolier's song, but fades out instead before he starts singing.
Bambina now talks with the same subtitle color as in the 3rd game. It was changed in the 3rd game, because it would lead to Bambina and Lotti having a conversation using both the same color.
In English, that one line from Bozo no longer sounds like is was outside already.
The pipe valve hotspot at Bambina now extends to the entire valve image.
The game now remembers the last music volume setting before it was turned off, so it can be restored correctly at that requester instead of always set to 51%. It also works reliably now and no longer turns off again with certain actions.
In the hideout, the slights are displayed with better contrast in the total view to match the close-ups.
The slideshow closeup in the rebel hideout has music again. This was a bug since version 3.x.
The developer's commentary no longer plays that misplaced "Yeah, enjoy the minigame!" from the first game in the hideout, interrupting the conversation.
The fine nose is now also animated when first visiting that screen.
The coal image is now correctly removed when collecting it.
The windsock animations are now aligned pixel exact, so there no longer are jumps between them.
The animation for bringing down the windsock to half-mast will play now. There is no animation to bring down the taut windsock, though.
Using the antenna with the hanging windsock no longer bugs out. Instead, Rufus automatically picks up the windsock before combining the items.
The socks don't move anymore before Rufus starts turning the crank.
The menu card at Chez Schlumpi now has 4 meals and fitting strokes instead of only 3 meals.
At the platypus field guide's closeup, one comment on the zebrafish had a cutting error in the German audio, which is now fixed.
When trying Liebold's remote on Janosch or Garlef, Rufus no longer turns to Liebold.
Present Rufus and past Rufus now use the same knock, as we don't want a time paradox here.
At the beginning of chapter VI, there is no unnecessary fade out and in again. This was a bug since version 3.x.
When using the broken transmitter with the radar, Doc no longer says that it has to go back on the radio mast but suggests to modify it instead.
Rufus now takes the cup of tee while Bozo is still talking.
In Porta Fisco, Goal is now waiting in front of the ramp, since several lines of dialog obviously assume the conversation to be taking place down there.
Rufus no longer turns away from Goal when using items on her.
Gronkh, a well known YouTuber in Germany and voice actor for Goon, has its developer's commentary now appears independent of the selected subtitle language, as English is now available. German audio has to be selected, of course.
Goon's smelly clouds are no longer cut off by the arch to the sewers.
Gronkh in the German developer's commentary is now positioned like Poki.
The first reply knock at the sewers no longer has an irritating double knock sound, which was a bug since version 2.x.
The knocks are now count correctly, even if clicking faster than the animation.
The chalkboard at Janosch is now aligned correctly to avoid that ugly double contour.
The service hatch now shows the talking icon.
While the dolphins are depressed, there are no longer spots flashing up in the environment.
The homage to Sierra now has its buttons spread across the entire requester, so that translations have sufficient space to fit in.
Selecting "New Game" at the homage to Sierra now starts the new game dialog from the main menu, giving the option to cancel that action, if you changed your mind.
Looking at the canister in the rebel hideout now makes Janosch giving a helpful hint, even when it is already in the inventory.
There is no longer an unvoiced line when trying to use the umbrella with certain air freshener trees.
When using the pump with the wading pool, Rufus no longer walks to the pump, only to walk back again to the plateau to put the wading pool there and then back to the pump.
On deck of the trawler, there is no longer a blue flashing edge when the waves turned gray in chapter VI.
The bubbles no longer jump back and forth under water. They also can be seen on front of the lights now.
At the transporter scene, the Organon cruiser can be seen docked to the blast tower now.
At the showdown, the music will play correctly again. This was a major issue since version 3.x.
At the showdown, the railing no longer has that ugly 3 pixel gap at the right edge.
Things formerly missing (may contain spoilers)
These omissions were caused by bugs in the scripts which are now fixed:
Rufus has an alternative line when giving the stick to Cleverbyte again before the stick is electrified.
In the trawler, Doc has a different reply when asked "What are we doing here again?" after the transmitter is installed.
Do I need the game for my platform?
No. The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder only requires the game resources, which are the same across operating systems. It also installs the engine usable on Windows, MacOS and Linux in any case. For instance, you could build an Ultimate Fan Patch Edition out of a first edition DVD, which is for Windows and MacOs only and play it on Linux. However, some versions of the game has to be installed on the original operating system or being extract with compatible tools, before the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder can be used on it.
How can I combine the original quality with the developer's commentary or combine languages from multiple versions?
It is generally possible to mix resources from several game versions, given they are all build for the same version of the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition. You can get the most complete version by combining a downgrade version with the Complete Journey Edition while taking only the Complete Journey Edition bonus and the developer's commentary from the latter.
Keep in mind that videos from German only releases only have German audio. All other versions have all 4 dubbing languages, even if a particular game release don't support them all.
In case you previously built a demo version and complement it to a full version now, remember to tick the "cutscene videos" option, since videos will only be build to the selected resources. In case of adding languages, you also should always tick both, the "cutscene videos" and the "demo version resources" option, so you don't miss any language specific videos.
The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition uses much fewer files to reduce the overhead. It is also possible to play directly from a DVD without very long loading times, if you want. This was achieved through efficiently repacking the resources. They are split in a reasonable way to make it easily possible to add or remove components as you like.
The resources are used like this:

Where can I find my savegames and settings?
Windows:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Daedalic Entertainment GmbH\Deponia 2 UFPE
MacOS:
$HOME/Library/Application Support/Daedalic Entertainment GmbH/Deponia 2 UFPE
Linux:
$XDG_DATA_HOME/Daedalic Entertainment GmbH/Deponia 2 UFPE
or
$HOME/.local/share/Daedalic Entertainment GmbH/Deponia 2 UFPE
Why is there no native version for Apple Silicon?
This uses a modded custom build made for the Daedalic games. Those simply haven't been ported by the Visionaire developers. My Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builders already uses a later version of the engine in many cases, resolving several engine related bugs. However, just using the latest version will lead to LUA incompatibilities, which would be a lot of extra work to debug, I didn't consider worth the effort right now.
Are there limitations I should know about?
Yes, the following should be considered:
Savegames and profiles are not compatible with other versions of the game and should not be interchanged. For that reason, we save them into a different folder: "Deponia 2 UFPE". It most likely will stays that way.
Voice acting and subtitles from different languages don't always match correctly. Especially Spanish and also Italian to a degree were cut quite differently, leading to incomplete voice playback or subtitles when combined with other languages. It is recommended to play Spanish and Italian voice acting only with their matching subtitle tracks and any other subtitle language with German or English voice acting.
On MacOS, the first start can take several minutes. When played direkt off a DVD, make it hours. This quirk is also present on several original versions and not limited to the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition.
Why can't I build a Complete Journey Ultimate Fan Patch Edition?
Since the Complete Journey is plagued with additional engine bugs, and has limited language support, I decided against supporting them. I rather focused on the more pressing issues the games have. However, you can build the single games out of the Complete Journey Edition, including the developer's commentary and the Complete Journey extras. Merely online functionality is limited to that of the single game. To compensate for that a little, you'll get offline achievements.
Where did the Facebook button and the advertisement banner go?
By default, I disabled all phoning-home features. The exceptions is the Steam API and the Galaxy API, which are completely optional and have to be used explicitly. If you'd like to have the banner and the Facebook button back, just delete the social.ini from the game's folder. This is a feature already present in most original Daedalic games, but here it is improved to work reliably in the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition.
Why is the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition larger/smaller than the original game?
Reasons why the game might be smaller:
When building from game versions before 3.x, you'll get better compressed webp. This saves about 30% on graphics. We use the lossless flavor, of course.
Abandoned and unused resources, which are not copied over.
Former redundant resources are only stored once.
Reasons why the game might be larger:
When installing multiple languages, the recap video will be installed in up to 3 versions.
When installing multiple languages, videos with credits in it are restored for every language separately.
Why are Liebold and Garlef no showing up when playing the demo?
To keep the demo small, they altered some scripts back then. The Ultimate Fan Patch Edition emulates these changes but keeps your savegames compatible to the full version at the same time:
Normaly, Liebold and Garlef show up in front of Doc's workshop for the first time after Doc sent Rufus to get the cartridges. This scene is not part of the demo, though. Now, when continuing a savegame from the demo in the full version, this scene will be triggered the next time, you're leaving Doc's workshop. That is, at the latest after Goal went to Gulliver's Gully.
This leads to the distinctive oddity when loading such a demo savegame into the full version, that you can visit Gulliver's Gully and knock at the door in the dark alley, before those characters are there. This special cases are now considered in the scripts.
In the original demo, exits were removed at the dock and in front of Doc's workshop which would lead further into the town. Those exits are present now, but when trying to use them in the demo, Rufus only reminds you, that he should help Doc and Goal first, just like he does regularly before you visited Doc. That particular comment was in-fact also present in the original demo at the map.
Savegames from the full version are playable in the demo as long you didn't bring the cartridges yet, and you did not visit any screen not present in the demo.
REQUIREMENTS
Windows 7, MacOS 10.7 or Linux x86_64.
FFmpeg version 4.2.0 or later with support for webp, vpx, vorbis and opus. Those are not compiled by default. Download versions with more than 70 MB usually have all that, but bare minimum versions at about 30 MB usually don't.
One or more supported versions of Deponia for Windows, Linux or MacOS

Extract Deponia_2_UFPE_Builder_4.7beta1.zip and put it in your game's folder. If your game version is for MacOS, that would be the sub-folder Deponia.app/Contents/Resources.the folder Steam told you when the depot has finished downloading.
Make sure FFmpeg is in the search path or in the same folder as the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder.
Run Deponia_2_UFPE_Builder.exe.mac_x86_64.command.linux_x86_64, and follow the instructions. The estimated building time is measured on the safe side with a Ryzen 5 2600 on an external hard drive, so the actual processing might be somewhat faster in most cases.
⚠ Attention: The MacOS version of the Ultimate Fan Patch Edition Builder is not yet tested thoroughly. It was compiled on MacOS 12, thus it probably won't run on earlier versions of MacOS. Feedback on which systems it actually works as intended, and on which systems it doesn't and what messages it gives is highly appreciated. The game itself should run on MacOS 10.7.
The single version of the game will be built in the sub folder Deponia_2_UFPE_4.7.
